About

We’re Justin and Jess

Engineer and Designer by trade – Craftsman and Artisan by passion. We’ve been DIYers before it was even cool (or a hashtag)! We love getting our hands into anything we can make ourselves. Justin has built just about everything in our house, as well as an RV-10 Airplane. Jess has her hands in anything from illustration, knitting, DIY body products, to Paleo cooking and baking.

Life Changes

In 2014 we had an eye-opening moment. We realized our environment and stuff wasn’t making us happy anymore and something was missing from our life. We desperately need to make a change. Justin and I decided to uproot everything and create a lifestyle that was meant for us. We sold our big house in the South, sold about 70% of our stuff (none of it we miss or even remember), packed up our daughter and two cats, and made the journey out west to Colorado in 2016. Bring it on life!

Building our Dream Home

The next part of this big move was deciding “Where did we want to live?”. The home prices in the Denver area are astronomically high, and we knew we didn’t want to keep renting. Weighing the options – renting, buying new, renovating a  “fixer upper” mid-century rancher – just didn’t make any sense to us and our financial goals.

After years of suburbia living, we knew that the mountains were calling and we wanted our own secluded piece of land. Lo and behold, we stumbled upon 3.6 acres (with an incredible view, I should add) with a lot of potential. We’re going to build ourselves a modern mountain home – our way!

Living Tiny

Along with building our own home, we knew we needed a place to live that wasn’t an hour from the site. So, we decided to purchase a 5th wheel travel trailer that needed a little lovin’, renovate it and live tiny in the mountains.

We’re sharing the journey (and reality) of living a minimal, tiny lifestyle while we literally build, beam-by-beam, our modern, mountain dream home.
